58. Verb + ing or to … iii (like/ would like etc.)

Like /Honey /hate

When you lot talk about repeated actions, you tin apply -ing or to ... afterward these verbs. So y'all tin say:

· Do you like getting up early? or Practise y'all like to get up early on?

· Stephanie hates flying . or Stephanie hates to fly .

· I love meeting people. or I honey to run into people.

· I don't similar being kept waiting. or ... like to be kept waiting.

· I don't similar friends calling me at work. or ... friends to call me at work.

We use -ing (non to ... ) when we talk about a situation that already exists (or existed).

For example:

· Paul lives in Berlin now. He likes living at that place. (He likes living in Berlin= He lives there and he likes information technology)

· Do you lot like being a student? (You are a pupil- do you like it?)

· The role I worked in was horrible. I hated working there. (I worked in that location and I hated it)

There is sometimes a departure betwixt I like to do and I like doing :

I like doing something = I exercise it and I enjoy it:

· I like cleaning the kitchen. (= I enjoy it.)

I like to do something= I think it is a proficient affair to practice, merely I don't necessarily enjoy it:

· It's not my favourite job, but I like to make clean the kitchen equally often as possible.

Note that enjoy and mind are always followed by -ing (not to ...):

· I bask cleaning the kitchen. (not I savour to clean)

· I don't mind cleaning the kitchen. (not I don't mind to clean)

Would like /would love etc. are ordinarily followed by to .. . :

· I 'd like (= I would like) to become abroad for a few days.

· Would you similar to come up to dinner on Friday?

· I wouldn't similar to go on vacation solitary.

· I 'd love to meet your family unit.

· Would you prefer to have dinner now or subsequently?

Compare I like and I would similar (I'd like ):

· I like playing tennis. /I like to play lawn tennis. (= I like information technology in general)

· I' d Like to play tennis today. (= I want to play today)

Would listen is always followed by - ing (non to ...):

· Would you mind closing the door, please?
